How to Read This Table

How to Read This Table

A typical listing is

205 AL 256 (1998), 334 (1995), (334 → 251)

In the left column, 205 is the original area code, located in Alabama. In the right column are all new area codes to which a number in 205 might have changed by geographic split or realignment since 1995, in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent. Part of the area that split off in 1995 to form area code 334, subsequently split again to form area code 251.

The area around Fort Pierce, Florida, has the distinction of the most convoluted history, having changed from 305 to 407 to 561 to 772, with two of those splits occurring since 1995. Northern San Diego County, California, was on track to tie or surpass that record (depending whether you count the 213/714 split back in 1951), having already changed from 714 to 619 to 760, and being scheduled to change to 442 in November 2008. However, the CPUC decided at the last minute to change to a 760 & 442 overlay.

The color coding also indicates the age of the split. Splits from 2006 and 2007 are shown in black boldface. Splits from 2003 to 2005 are shown in blue boldface, and splits from 1995 to 2002 are shown in red. Splits prior to 1995 are no longer shown in this chart.

Only geographic splits are shown in this table, since in general overlays do not result in any change to existing telephone numbers. For a complete listing of all splits and overlays since 1995, see areacode.html and oldnews.html here on the LincMad area code site. For a brief listing of all active area codes numerically — Now with Time Zones! — see locator.html ; for a more complete listing of the communities in each area code (alphabetically by state or province), see cities.html.

Since 2007, every single new area code in the United States and Canada has been added as an overlay, halting the activity in this listing. The downside is more digits to dial for local calls, but the benefit is not changing your number. This listing is preserved primarily for historical interest.

Other Notes

Other Notes

270: Kentucky postponed, postponed, and again postponed the planned split of area code 270, before finally just cancelling it, only to revive it as an overlay.

310: The CPUC decided to overlay 310, then they decided to split it, and now they’ve decided to overlay it. The overlay finally happened in 2006.

403, 819: The Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories, and the new Nunavut territory were served by the area codes for Alberta (403) and northern Québec (819). These northern territories of Canada are now served by the 867 area code. Alberta is served by the 403 and the new 780 area code with multiple overlays; northern Québec is still served by the 819 area code and its overlays.

407 (a): The 321 area code, introduced in late 1999, is a bizarre combination of a split and overlay. All existing 407 numbers in Brevard County changed to 321.

407 (b): The DeBary rate center, including part of the city of Deltona, realigned from 407 into the new 386 area code at the same time the 386 area split from 904. The area known as Osteen did not change; it remains in 407 & 321.

504, 985: The 504 area code split in 2001 to form the 985 area code, covering the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, the area west of New Orleans, and also the Mississippi River Delta/‌Lower Plaquemines Parish. In 2007, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Delta area was realigned back into 504. The affected communities are Buras, Carlisle, Magnolia, Pointe à la Hache, and Port Sulphur. The (985) prefixes of 358, 534, 564, 644, 687, and 814 reverted to (504). Additionally, the (985) 238 and 333 prefixes changed to (504) with new 7-digit local numbers.

513: In 1996, area code 513 split, with the Daytona metropolitan area moving to 937. The Franklin rate center realigned from 513 into 937 in order to avoid the 513/283 overlay in 2001. Then the 513/283 overlay was shelved, finally resurrected in 2021 for implementation in 2023. (In fact, 937 got an overlay in 2020.)

760: The 760 area code was scheduled to split in late 2008, with the northern part of San Diego County changing to 442, while the large swath from Imperial County to Palm Springs and Death Valley, up the eastern Sierra Nevada, was to retain 760. However, at the last minute, the CPUC ordered an overlay of 760, which took effect ,. All existing 760 numbers remain in 760.

809: For many years, area code 809 served a total of 18 countries and territories in the Caribbean region plus nearby Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean. As of June 1999, 809 now serves only the Dominican Republic. Each other country or territory in the former 809 area code now has its own separate area code; see caribbean.html for a complete listing, or caribmap.html for a map.

909: The CPUC first ordered a combination split and overlay of 909, but then cancelled the plan. However, the 909/951 split was revived and implemented in 2004. The San Bernardino area kept 909 while the Riverside area changed to 951. The 909 area was overlaid in 2021.

916: The community of Dixon, California, changed from 916 to 707. All other former 916 numbers are in either 916 or 530. Dixon was scheduled to change to 369, but the 707/369 split has been cancelled — only to be resurrected as an overlay for 2023.

919: Area code 910 was created in 1993. Davidson County was realigned from 919 to 910 in 1996. The following year, Davidson County was part of the area that split from 910 to form area code 336.
