About These Tables
This page presents a cross-reference table, connecting an area code to the details page for the location of that area code. You can add a hash (# symbol) followed by the three-digit area code, to the URL for the details page to jump directly to the one you want. Note that a few codes appear in more than one listing. Puerto Rico, for example, is filed under "States P-through-W" and also under "Caribbean and Other Places."
The country code for Canada, the United States, and various islands, is +1.
All new area codes in Canada since 2000 have been added as overlays, meaning that the new area code serves the same geographic territory as the old area code or codes. ; All new area codes added in the United States since 2008 have also been overlays. In fact, the only non-overlay area code added since 2008 was when Sint Maarten (half of an island in the Caribbean, now area code 721) joined the NANP in 2011.
The U.S. tables give the area codes for each state, with a list of important cities and towns in each area code. Weight is given to population and also to proximity to the border with an adjoining area code. In some cases, counties, parks, airports, and other landmarks may be listed. Note that U.S. states are listed alphabetically by two-letter postal abbreviation, so they are slightly out of order by full name.
If you hear something like "additional cities:" in a listing, descend into the table cell for more details.
Area codes not yet in effect are shown visually in parentheses in green, and are announced, preceded by the word "future".
The Canada table follows the same format for the provinces and territories, with provinces listed from west to east. The Caribbean Other Island table lists the territory or country with major islands or cities. Unless otherwise indicated, the island is an independent nation located in the Caribbean. The Nearby Country Codes table lists non-NANP international country codes for selected areas adjacent to the NANP. NANPA maintains lists of prefixes within U.S. area codes; go to https://www.NationalNANPA.com/reports/reports_cocodes.html and look under “Central Office Code Utilized Report.” Then select the state and either a single area code or all of the area codes for that state, to get a downloadable listing.
