The state of Utah planned 385 as a geographic split of area code 801, back in 2001. The planned split was postponed, postponed again, postponed yet again, and finally cancelled. It was resurrected and finally implemented as an overlay on 2009-03-29.

Following Hurricane Katrina, lower Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana — the Mississippi River Delta area — was realigned from area code 985 back to 504. Buras, Pointe à la Hache, Port Sulphur, and Venice were affected. The (985) 358, 534, 564, 644, 687, and 814 prefixes changed back to (504); the (985) 238 and 333 prefixes changed to (504) with new 7-digit local numbers.
